What is Reiki?

All of us are energy. Everything in the world is made up of energy, which can be defined most simply as “information that vibrates.” Subtle energy is simply energy that cannot be accurately measured using current scientific methods. It’s not supernatural, paranormal or scary – it’s just energy. A long time ago, our ancestors saw energy in ways that have been dismissed in recent times. We are slowly reconnecting with these subtle energies much like our ancestors did. We are employing our inner senses as tools to connect with these subtle energies. Let’s look at one energy healing modality which uses subtle energy.

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is an energy practice involving the channeling and delivery of universal life energy, an animate energy found everywhere within and around us. It is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation which also promotes healing. The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words Rei and Ki.

Rei can be defined as universal, which is the most accepted definition. It can also be defined as higher knowledge or spiritual consciousness. This is the wisdom that comes from Source, Higher-Self or the All-Knowing. It understands each person completely.

Ki is life energy. It is also known as the vital life force or the universal life force. It animates all living things. If your energy is low, or if there is a restriction in its flow, you can be more vulnerable to illness. When it is high and flowing freely, you are less likely to get sick. Life energy plays an important role in everything we do. It animates the body and has higher levels of expression. Ki is also the primary energy of our emotions, thoughts, and spiritual life.

The term Reiki literally means “spiritually guided life energy.” It is life energy that is guided by a higher power. Reiki aligns and works with the Chakra system.

Chakras are energy gateways between our physical bodies and the world around us. They allow the currents of energy to flow between you and the world at large. Your body actively generates frequencies in the form of electric and magnetic currents, which radiate inside, outside and around your physical body. These currents overlap, forming vertical-oriented gateways. That’s a lot of moving energy!

Chakras can be described as spinning, whirlpool-like wheels of light on both the front and back sides of your being, and when balanced, they channel energy optimally to keep your body at peak performance. Everything we know has a chakra system – humans, plants, animals, the planet and beyond.

Balancing your Chakras can help you to:

  • Cleanse negative feelings and thoughts

  • Find relief from stress

  • Heal trauma

  • Strengthen protective energy

  • Release unwanted energy

  • Gain clarity

  • Expand Spiritually

  • And so much more . . .
