The Chakra System: Part 2 – The Sacral

During this series, we are going to take a deeper look at the individual chakras. In addition to the seven traditional chakras (Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye and Crown), we will also look at five additional chakras (Earth Star, Soul Star, Stellar Gateway, Universal Gateway and Divine Gateway) which make up the 12-Chakra System. Let’s continue our journey with the second Chakra known as the Sacral Chakra. It is located one to two inches below the naval. The Sacral Chakra’s mantra is: I FEEL.

The sacral chakra is associated with passion, intimacy, and abundance. It’s generally considered the womb space. Understanding in this zone centers around the knowledge of creation.  What you feel (thoughts and emotions), you ultimately create or make manifest. The sacral is about stepping fully into your being and recognizing that your experiences are mirroring back your inner landscape. The sacral is about passions, not only in an intimate setting, but for life itself, manifestation, and inspiration.

The primary color of this chakra is orange.  It evokes a bright and creative state of being. Orange is composed of red (intensity) and yellow (joy) – orange is then vibrant, stimulating, fascinating, and encouraging.  This color typically elicits creativity. It’s also a symbol of strength, endurance, abundance, and happiness.

On the emotional side, the sacral is where your deepest feelings of pleasure (satisfaction and enjoyment) and wellbeing live.  It also taps into your sense of intimacy and belonging. This is also where you can connect to the vulnerable parts of yourself and begin to work with the shadow aspects.

If you have an underactive sacral chakra, you may withhold or avoid your emotions or expression of them. You may also experience a lack of self-confidence. You may feel creatively stuck or at a dead end. You may also lack close bonds with others. All these feelings can create insecurities, but you can also learn to change your perceptions over time with support and practice.

Signs of an overactive sacral chakra can include emotional instability. You may feel out of control or overwhelmed – or just feel things much deeper than normal. Severe mood swings may cause you to act irresponsibly to others’ feelings. You may be indecisive, inconsistent, or domineering.  Some may describe you as insincere or superficial.  It can feel unsafe to be in the presence of someone with an overactive sacral chakra. Symptoms of excess energy show up as sex addicts, overt self-indulgence, exhibitionism, aggression, arrogance, or mania. Excess energy in this chakra can also be expressed through any obsessive attachments (codependency or seductive manipulation).

A balanced sacral chakra, you feel present in your body. You know when your primary needs are being met, your sacral is supported, and you can establish much deeper relationships in the world. When you are engaged and connected, the energy bonds with others in a way that allows for true intimacy. You understand your own needs and have learned to check in with yourself often to gauge your own emotions – this is the meaning/embodiment of emotional stability.

Creativity is the attribute to the sacral chakra. When you are tapped into your inner inspiration, you have the desire and capacity to create your vision or make your artistic expression. When you allow creativity as a driving force into your world, you notice everything around you (career, relationships, family, success, abundance, etc.) is your creation, your manifestation. You control everything as your ideas birth new forms around you.

A person with a highly developed sacral chakra shows signs of high emotional intelligence. They are empathetic, aware of and control their own emotions. It is easy for them to tune into others. They display balanced feminine and masculine energies. They are the influencers – charming, self-reliant, enthusiastic. They possess creative outlets.  As empathy is a gift of this chakra, empaths must be careful here.  It’s easy to focus attention on the needs of others rather than on the self. You can train yourself through mindful awareness and correct this behavior over time and with practice.

The portal to creating new life exists in the sacral chakra. It is a great source of power. It can carry great love stories or shame. Betrayal and hurt live here and once healed, the ability to clear though your worst fears and wounding arise. This energetic center exemplifies polarity as it brings together both feminine and masculine energies which work to help you navigate your whole reality. Your ability to perceive or feel impacts how you connect with your inner world as well as your ability to empathize and associate with others.
